The Sanctuary of Our Savior’s Lutheran is important for Augustana College as we usually use it for the Opening Convocation ceremony. It is well worth a visit during the day because, when not in use, the sanctuary is kept dim, with natural light flooding in from the chancel and trickling in through the walls, invoking the mysterious and sacred.
The chancel is a tall white brick wall, invoking holiness and purity. The chancel mural depicts the resurrection of Christ:

Christ is the central figure, with two ‘spiritual beings’ proclaiming to the thirteen people below:
MEN OF GALILEE WHY DO YOU
STAND LOOKING INTO HEAVEN
THIS JESUS WHO WAS TAKEN
UP FROM YOU INTO HEAVEN
WILL COME IN THE SAME WAY
YOU SAW HIM GO INTO HEAVEN
(Acts 1:11)
The thirteen include the eleven remaining disciples plus Jesus’ mother Mary and Mary Magdeline. When you are finished taking in mural, turn around and appreciate the organ. The balcony is usually decorated with banners from the appropriate part of the church year.
After you’re finished here, we’ll be crossing the street the Gilbert Science Center. As we cross 33rd, we’ll be taking a quick look back at the last entry for Our Savior’s Lutheran.
